Just over a week ago, the latest iteration of the ultra-prolific Acid Mothers Temple Soul Collective, Acid Mothers Guru Guru, wound it’s way into Portland touring their latest release, Psychedelic Navigator. AMGG is a heavy psyche trio comprised of two AMT members and Mani Neumeier of Guru Guru.Guru Guru formed in 1968, and with their more recognized comrades-in-arms Can and Faust, helped dig the vein of psychedelia known as Krautrock. From the sound of things, Mani Neumeier hasn’t left his kit since, splaying out a concisely wandering barrage that fit perfectly with the guitar work of AMT’s Kawabata Makoto and Tsuyama Atsushi.
Though not as heavy as other AMT collabs (AMT & The Cosmic Inferno!!), AMTGG certainly maintained the collective’s status as “The Japanese Gods Of Freakout Mayhem”. Mani’s solo run on an emptied bag of metal plates and pans was bogglingly great, and he carried the seminal AMT tune, Pink Baby Lemonade (You’re So Sweet) like a re-born, mutant infant.
It’s always so reaffirming to see old psyche artists like Mani, Damo Suzuki and Gong annihilating it with the same intensity as they did decades ago. This night was no exception and served up a perfect, medicinal dose against the murk. Shots in the header, A/V goodness below.
